Douglas Young Obituary

Douglas Gelsinger Young, known affectionately as Doug to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2025, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born on January 7, 1945, in Reading, Pennsylvania, Doug's life was a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of love and dedication.

Doug's early years in Reading set the foundation for a life marked by hard work and service. A proud graduate of Governor Mifflin High School, Class of 1963, he carried forth the values of his education throughout his life. He immediately went to serve our country in the Navy, where iron men worked on wooden ships.

Doug's commitment to his community was evident through his numerous leadership roles, including serving as the President of the Home Builders Association (HBA) of Berks County, a position that allowed him to share his passion for craftsmanship and mentorship with others.

As the dedicated owner of Douglas Young Builder, Inc from 1980 to 2009, he built not just homes but also lasting relationships with clients and colleagues alike. His work ethic and integrity were the cornerstones of his successful career, and his contributions to the industry left a lasting impact.

Doug's service extended beyond his professional life. He was an Eagle Scout, a distinction that spoke to his character and his love for the outdoors. He continued his involvement in scouting as the Scoutmaster for Troop 264, shaping the lives of young men by instilling in them the values of leadership and responsibility. His faith was also a guiding light in his life, serving as President of Zion's Evangelical Church and sharing his spirituality with all those he encountered.

In his personal life, Doug was a loving husband to Joanne Young, a supportive father to Kenneth Young and Katie Jo Shank, and a proud father-in-law to Dustin Shank. His joy multiplied with the birth of each grandchild: Kendall, Carter, Jack, Chase, Brayden, and Ryan, and his legacy continued with the arrival of his great-grandson, Bryce Shank. Doug's family was the center of his universe, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

Doug's passion for life was evident in his diverse interests. An avid enthusiast of anything with wheels and speed, he was a huge fan of all forms of racing. His love for woodworking was not just a hobby but a form of expression, where he created pieces that were as functional as they were beautiful. A man who loved the simplicity of nature, he found solace in being outside, whether it was mowing the lawn or relaxing in his gazebo. Doug's hunting trips and time spent at his home by Raystown Lake were some of his most treasured moments, providing him with peace and a deep connection to the natural world.

Those who knew Doug would describe him as loving, faith-filled, and gentle. His presence brought comfort and his actions spoke of his commitment to his beliefs and to those he loved. Doug's gentle nature was his strength, and it resonated in every aspect of his life.

Doug passed away in Mohnton, Pennsylvania, surrounded by the landscapes he so dearly loved. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. Douglas Young's life was a journey of dedication, love, and service, and his memory will be cherished by all whose lives he touched.

As we remember Doug, we celebrate a life well-lived, a man who built more than just structures—he left a legacy of love, faith, and generosity that will endure for generations to come.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to the American Cancer Society in Doug’s name.
