Dr. George Kershner Obituary

Dr. George H. Kershner, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and devoted friend, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on September 16, 1944 in West Reading, Pennsylvania, George was the son of E. Laura (Keim) Kershner and Henry E. Kershner. He was filled with compassion, dedication, and an unyielding zest for life.

George graduated from Wilson High School in 1962. He graduated from Albright College in 1966, before following his calling to Thomas Jefferson Medical School, where he graduated in 1970. He served as a Naval officer and doctor during the Vietnam War.

Following his service, George returned to Pennsylvania, where he began his lifelong career in medicine. He began his residency at the Reading Hospital and later spent his entire career in the  Emergency Room, where his expertise, skill, and compassion for others truly shone. As Director of the ER from 1980 to 1995, George was a cornerstone of comfort and care, treating people under high pressure in their worst moments. He continued to serve in the ER tirelessly until his retirement in 2012, touching countless lives with his skill and empathy.

George's life was filled with interests and passions far beyond his professional achievements. He loved Classical music, and served on the Board of Directors for the Reading Symphony Orchestra where he shared that love with the broader community. He also had remarkable musical talent on his own, and as a classical pianist, George played over 100 recitals and numerous larger concerts, always challenging himself with the most intricate pieces written by some of the greatest classical composers.

Sailing was another of George's great loves. He guided family and friends on unforgettable weekends and more ambitious weeks-long trips through the Chesapeake Bay, around New England, and in the Caribbean, where the sea was a reflection of his free spirit, George also loved baseball, and was able to dedicate time with his children and that sport when he became head coach for his sons' little league teams, and later umpired across the league, instilling the values of teamwork and sportsmanship in young players.

Those who knew George remembered him for his quick wit, infectious laughter, and impressive intellect. He had an uncanny ability to recall the smallest details, always ready with a story or a joke. His warmth and generosity knew no boundaries, as he was always there to offer help to family, friends, and strangers alike.

George is survived by his devoted wife, Susie Kershner, who stood by his side through the years, filling their life with love and laughter. He is lovingly remembered by his sister, Susan Reeser, and his sons, David, Michael, and Geoffrey, and their mother Dr. Marilyn Kershner. His legacy lives on in his ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his spirit of kindness and curiosity.

As we bid farewell to George, we celebrate a life lived with passion, purpose, laughter, and unending love. His memory will forever be a guiding light for those fortunate enough to have known him. In honoring his life, we find comfort in knowing that his legacy of compassion and dedication will continue to inspire future generations. George H. Kershner, a life well-lived, will be profoundly missed but never forgotten.
