Dr. Leonard Mark Dietrich, 82, of Greenwich Township, passed away on Friday, October 3, 2025 in his home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Linda (Weidner) Dietrich for 58 years. Leonard was born in West Reading to Howard J. Dietrich and E. Marie (Cleaver) Dietrich. He was a graduate of Oley Valley Area High School, Albright College and Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (Missouri). After completing an internship, he practiced medicine for one year in Mount Joy, PA. Leonard and Linda moved to Kutztown, where he started a solo family medical practice. During these early years, he also worked part-time at Kutztown University as a home football game physician and in the student health care center. Later, Leonard served at Kutztown Area High School as the home football game physician. He enjoyed caring for his many patients, sometimes three generations of a family. Leonard made house calls, delivered quite a few babies, and cared for nursing home patients.
Outside of his practice, Leonard thoroughly enjoyed the peace and beauty of living in the country. His children grew up believing he could fix anything. He tackled many projects over the years, such as restoring their 1790 log house, redoing the wiring, plumbing, and walls. Loud classical music or 1060 AM radio usually played while he worked on his projects. Cutting trees for firewood, tapping maple trees to make maple syrup, gardening, picking berries and tree fruits, and woodworking were some of his favorite things. He loved to fish at his pond and help his children and grandchildren learn how to fish. As a teenager, Leonard earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Later, he took snacks to his sons’ Boy Scout camp and helped the troop when needed. When the children were young, the family went on fishing trips to Quebec and the Poconos. After retiring, Leonard and Linda enjoyed many trips to California and New York to visit their children and grandchildren. They toured several western National Parks.
Leonard is survived by Linda, as well as their children and grandchildren: Dr. Aaron L. Dietrich, wife Jennifer Muck-Dietrich and daughter Clara; Dr. Alison E. Dietrich, husband Chris Cowan and children Cleo and Lincoln; Ethan M. Dietrich, wife Lauren-Michelle Boldt and daughters Evelyn and Josephine; and Emily K. Dietrich Witmer, husband Adam J. Witmer and daughter Sophia. Additional survivors include Leonard’s brother, Dr. Malcolm H. Dietrich, his wife Phyllis and numerous nieces and nephews. A sister, Dr. Marcia C. Dietrich, predeceased him.
All of Leonard and Linda’s children were with him during his last few weeks. Leonard was very proud of them and thankful for their presence, love and support. In some of his last conversations, Leonard expressed deep concern about the impact recent changes in our our government would have on the future for his children, grandchildren and other people. It was his wish that every person who can vote research candidates and vote in every election so that our Constitution and the rule of law, so integral to our nation, be preserved for generations to come.
Lehigh Valley Hospice provided much appreciated assistance to Leonard at home. They are a special team of nurses and staff who were always available, empathetic and skilled. They knew when he needed daily visits and helped guide his family.
Out of respect for Leonard’s wishes, there will be no public memorial service. Please consider honoring Leonard’s memory by making a contribution to Helping Harvest, Safe Berks, Salvation Army or Animal Rescue League of Berks County.
