Harold Marks (Hal) of Ormond Beach was born October 8, 1926 in Mohnton, Berks County, Pennsylvania, son of Harry P. and Sadie (Schnader) Marks. He died August 31, 2022, predeceased by sisters Corinne Moyer and Marian Kreider. He graduated from Mohnton High School in 1944. Hal enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and served with the South Pacific Amphibious Forces aboard LCS 63 and LST 775. After his discharge in 1946 Marks attended Kutztown University and while there played basketball for 3 years before graduating in 1949. He became a member of the Boyertown High School faculty and served as a science teacher and basketball coach until 1955. He received his Master’s Degree in School Administration from Temple University in 1954.
Hal and Barbara Cressman were married in 1953 and moved to Daytona Beach in 1955 where he was appointed a teacher at Riverview Elementary School. In 1962 he became Principal at Riverview and then was selected as Principal at Port Orange Elementary in 1965 serving there until 1979. In 1980 after the construction of Spruce Creek Elementary School, he became the Principal and served there until his retirement in 1986.
Hal was inducted for the Port Orange Wall of Honor recognizing his tenure as Principal of Port Orange Elementary for 15 years and then Principal of Spruce Creek Elementary for 6 years where he coordinated the efforts of the City and the Volusia County School Board for shared cost of the athletic fields’ facilities at Spruce Creek.
For two years 1986-1988 Marks was the Principal of the International School of Curacao in the Caribbean.
After returning from Curacao in 1988, he and his wife Barbara worked together to publish their Swiss-German Marks Ancestry beginning with the ancestors’ arrival in Philadelphia in 1735 to the present time. All ancestors settled in Berks and Lancaster Counties of Pennsylvania from 1735 to present time.
Mr. Marks, his wife and children became members of Trinity Lutheran Church beginning in 1955 and the children were baptized and confirmed there. Hal and former Pastor Glock planned and established Trinity Lutheran School in 1980.
Hal is survived by his wife Barbara of 69 years and 5 children, Randolph, Sandra Peerless (Christopher), Carol Culkin (Gerald), Gary (Darryl-Anne), Lee Ann Carroll (Jeffrey Lee), 7 Grandchildren and 9 Great Grandchildren.
Services for Mr. Marks will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1205 Ridgewood Ave., Holly Hill, FL on Saturday, September 10, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., with family visitation at the Church prior to the services, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and a reception at the Church Fellowship Hall after the services until 1:00 p.m.. There will be a graveside service and interment at Wyomissing United Church of Christ, Wyomissing Cemetery, 1700 Old Lancaster Pike, Gouglersville, PA 19608. The family request that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Hal Marks’s name to Trinity Lutheran Church, Holly Hill, Florida.
