James Weidenhammer Obituary

James "Smokey" Weidenhammer, a man cherished for his handy skills, loving nature, and creative spirit, passed away peacefully due to natural causes on April 8, 2024, in his hometown of Reading, Pennsylvania. Born on June 15, 1948, to Chester and Ethel Weidenhammer, Smokey was a beacon of strength and reliability to all who knew him.

Smokey is survived by his devoted wife, Anita "Neety" Tait-Weidenhammer. Their partnership was a testament to enduring love and mutual respect. He was a proud father to his daughters.  Jamie Gregro, married to Gary Gregro, and their sons Alex and Nash, the latter being the loving husband to Lindsey and the doting father of Carter, Caleb, and Isla. His second daughter, Cortney Hurley, and granddaughter Autumn Hurley also held a special place in his heart. Smokey was a brother to Chester, Kevin, Frank, and Marge, each of whom will carry forward his legacy in their own lives.

Smokey's professional life was marked by a remarkable 43-year tenure at Forino Developers, where he showcased his expertise as a construction worker, heavy equipment operator, and finisher of concrete. His colleagues knew him as a man who could always be counted on to do the job right and with a spirit of excellence.

Beyond his work, Smokey was an avid NASCAR fan, a passion he indulged in every chance he got. His love for the roar of engines was matched by his joy in working on cars and trucks, a hobby he shared with his great-nephews Tyler and Nathan Strickler. His ability to fix and create was not just a skill but a form of connection with those he loved.

Smokey's character was a blend of the practical and the profound. As Henry David Thoreau once said, "It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see." This quote captures the essence of Smokey's approach to life. He saw potential where others saw problems and solutions where others saw obstacles.

A traditional man in many ways, Smokey's values were rooted in family, hard work, and the simple pleasures of life. His ready smile, warm embrace, and the twinkle in his eye will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him.

As we bid farewell to James "Smokey" Weidenhammer, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and love. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us, just as the stars guide the traveler on their journey through the night. Smokey's journey on earth may have concluded, but his spirit remains an indelible part of the lives he touched.
