John E. Messner, 100, of Brecknock Township, passed away at the Reading Hospital on Thursday, April 7, 2022. He was a guest at Country Meadows in Wyomissing for the past two years.
He was the widow of the late Jeannette E. (Seitzinger) Messner who passed away on February 15, 2005.
Born in Brecknock Township, he was the son of the late Wayne and Mary (Seifert) Messner.
Growing up, John attended the Maple Grove Schoolhouse. He enlisted in the U.S. Army serving during W.W.II. Upon his discharge he went to work for Bollman Hat Factory and then to Carpenter Technologies, where he retired on July 1, 1987.
He was a lifetime member of the Pennwyn Motor Association, Gouglersville Fire Company, Adamstown VFW, and a member of Alleghenyville Evangelical Lutheran Church. John enjoyed vacationing in Ocean City, Maryland, gardening, hunting, fishing, playing quoits, picking morel mushrooms and going to the Hollywood Casinos.
Surviving are children Bruce E., husband of Jan E. Messner of Lynchburg, VA; Maureen F. Witwer of Apopka, FL; Ronald E. Messner of Brecknock Twp. and Ricky E., husband of Melissa Messner of Haymarket, VA. Also surviving is granddaughter Amy J., wife of James Gunter of Arlington, VA and a brother, James A., husband of Susan Messner of Brecknock Twp.
He was predeceased by siblings: Jacob A. Messner, Samuel L. Messner, Elizabeth Hornberger, Mary Ellen Althouse and a grandson, Eric C. Messner.
Relatives and Friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service on Saturday, April 16, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at Alleghenyville Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1327 Alleghenyville Road, Mohnton.
A viewing will be held on Friday, April 15, 2022 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Giles & Yeckley Funeral Home and Crematorium, Inc., 21 Chestnut Street, Mohnton, and again on Saturday, April 16, 2022 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Church.
Interment will be Allegheny Union Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff at Country Meadows for their wonderful care, and also the hospice staff of Tower Health at Home for their care.
