We come together today to remember and celebrate the life of Melvin Ray Slichter, known affectionately to friends and family as Ray, who passed away peacefully on June 1, 2024 at the age of 93. Born on September 7, 1930, Ray's journey through life was marked by his spirited nature, his handiness, and his unwavering commitment to his community. Ray was a proud 1948 graduate of Mohnton High School, and shortly thereafter, he answered the call of duty, serving in the US Navy from 1950 to 1957. During his time in the service, he was stationed aboard the DMS Ellyson and later shared his knowledge as an electrical instructor in the reserves. His dedication to his country was a testament to his character and his sense of responsibility.
After his military service, Ray brought his strong work ethic and skilled craftsmanship to the Edgar Zerbe Building Company and the Douglas Young Building Company, where he held the position of carpenter and foreman. His meticulous work and ability to solve problems were highly regarded, and his contributions to the structures he helped create have stood as lasting monuments to his talent.
Beyond his professional life, Ray was deeply involved in his local community. Throughout his life, Ray was an active member of Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Mohnton. He was a longtime member of the Mohnton Lions Club, where he worked tirelessly to serve and improve the lives of others. Ray also played a vital role in the original building of the “Magic In Mohnton” playground. His commitment to public service also shone brightly in his role as Assistant Fire Chief of Cedar Top Fire Company, where he dedicated countless hours to ensuring the safety of his neighbors. An avid outdoorsman, Ray was a member of the Corbett Hunting Club in Potter County, Pennsylvania. There, he indulged in his passion for hunting and fishing, reveling in the tranquility of nature and the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts. His love for the outdoors was a source of joy and relaxation throughout his life.
Ray was a family man through and through. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Barbara A. (Werner), his brothers Delvin J. and Noel Slichter, his sister Corinne Wertz, and his parents, Melvin H. and CylomaSlichter. He is survived by his sons, Thomas S. Slichter and his wife Margo K., and Douglas R. Slichter and his wife Joanne M. The legacy of his love and guidance can be seen in his grandchildren, Michael T. Slichter and his wife Pam Hummert-Slichter, Amy L. Rounceville and her husband JoshRounceville, and Andrew D. Slichter. Ray's great-granddaughters, Kayla L. and Madeline R. Rounceville, will also hold the memories of their great-grandfather close to their hearts.
Those who knew Ray will remember him as a man who could fix anything, who approached life with a zest that was contagious, and who always had a story to share. His hands may have been those of a carpenter, shaping wood and stone, but they were also the hands that held his loved ones close, that cast a fishing line into the still morning waters, and that were extended in friendship and aid. As we bid farewell to Melvin Ray Slichter, we do so with gratitude for the time we shared with him and for the indelible mark he left on the world. His spirit, his work, and his love for family and community will continue to inspire those who had the privilege to know him.
Rest in peace, Ray. Your journey has been a blueprint of dedication, love, and true service, one that will guide us for generations to come.
