Richard Kaufman Obituary

Richard D. Kaufman, a cherished family man, respected community member, and talented musician, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2024, at the age of 95. Born on March 26, 1929, in Reading, PA, Richard's life was marked by his dedication to his country, his love for music, and his passion for sports.

Richard's early years in Reading set the stage for a life full of service and entertainment. After graduating from high school, he proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1948 to 1952. During his service, he showcased his musical talent by playing the trombone in the Air Force Band, bringing joy and solace to many through his performances.

Following his military service, Richard embarked on a diverse career. He returned to his hometown and became an integral part of the community. His professional life was as varied as his interests; he retired from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and had previously worked at the Bank of Pennsylvania. Demonstrating his love for sports, in 1953 and 1954, Richard was the Assistant General Manager for the Reading Indians Baseball Team of the Eastern League.

Richard's commitment to his community extended beyond his professional endeavors. He was a former director of the Animal Rescue League of Berks County and the Streitwieser Foundation Trumpet Museum. These roles allowed him to give back to the community that he held so dear.

Richard was an avid sports fan, particularly of baseball and hockey and also had a great fondness for steam engines. Richard's love for music was a constant throughout his life. He played in numerous music groups in the Reading area and shared the stage with many great artists, including The McGuire Sisters, Steve Lawrence, Redd Foxx, Arthur Prysock, Johnny Hartman, Buck Clayton, and Etta Jones. His musical legacy is one of talent, passion, and the power of bringing people together through the universal language of music.

Family was the cornerstone of Richard's life. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Fae (Zellers), and his sister, Jean Louise Cook. His memory will be lovingly cherished by his grandson, Chris (wife Carrie) of Shillington, PA; his daughter, Marcia Hornberger (husband Rick) of Stowe, PA; his niece, Susan Cole of Los Angeles, CA, and all of his many wonderful friends from the Berks Encore Senior Center in Shillington. Each of them carries forward a piece of Richard's spirit and joy.

Richard lived a long, full, and vibrant life, leaving behind a legacy of love, music, and community service. His memory will be honored not just through words, but through the melodies he played and the impact he had on everyone around him. As we bid farewell to Richard, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man well-loved.

Interment will be private.  In honor of Richard, the family will be hosting a celebration of life luncheon on Sunday, June 30th from 12pm-3pm at Paolo’s Restaurant & Bar, 2480 Lancaster Pike, Reading, PA 19607.
