Shirley Showalter

Shirley M. Showalter, 94, of Mohnton, passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at her residence.

She was the widow of Robert F. Showalter who died on Feb. 26, 1997.

Born in Reading, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Margaret (Seifert) Negri.

Shirley was raised in Berks County and attended Reading High School.  She married Robert and moved to Mohnton where she worked in various hosiery mills.  She was a longtime active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mohnton where she sang in the Choir, participated in Bell Choir, Altar Guild and was a member of W.E.L.C.A.  She enjoyed attending meetings of the League of Golden Agers in Mohnton and the C.D.B.  (Coffee, Donuts and Bingo) in Kenhorst.    You could always see Shirley walking around town, either going to church or up the hill to the Y.M.C.A., she was always on the move.  She loved to volunteer her time at church, to Meals on Wheels and the Mifflin Community Food Bank.  She always sang the National Anthem at the Mohnton Memorial Day Remembrance Celebration.   Shirley was a recipient of the 2011 Mohnton Lions Club “Citizen of the Year” for her community volunteer service.    

Surviving are two sons, Gary D. Showalter of Mohnton and Kevin R. Showalter, husband of Wanda England of Lebanon.  Also surviving are four grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, two  great great grandchildren, and three siblings, Franklin Negri of Reading, Dawn J. Melnyk of Wernersville and Janet L. Hill of West Lawn.  She was predeceased by seven siblings: Raymond, Donald, Robert, James, Richard, Patricia and Barbara.

Relatives and Friends are invited to attend her Funeral Service on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 at 10:30 A.M. at Saint John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, S. Church Street, Mohnton, with Pastor Jessica Schmidt, officiating.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 from 9:30 to 10:30 A.M. at the church.

Interment will be on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at 10:00 A.M. at Laureldale Cemetery.
